PeaceWorks is a different type of technical organization. We have strong expertise, but we are personally and professionally rooted with values that reflect social justice, community and integrity. We believe that staff and clients are valued partners in bettering our world.
What does it mean to be a "Social Enterprise?" The Social Enterprise Council of Canada looks at numerous definitions and concludes, "there are common themes across all definitions: they are businesses; they create community impacts and social values; and they limit or don’t have distribution of profits and assets to individual share holders. So rather than a defined thing, social enterprises are much more a means to achieve value, they are a verb, not a noun."
At PeaceWorks, we believe we have been a social enterprise long before the term came into being. We have always concentrated on multiple factors to measure our success. In order to be a sustainable enterprise, there has to be profit, but our key motivation comes from our level of social impact. To be successful, we need to be equipping the community and our clients with technology solutions that are truly making a positive difference. Our success is measured in the success of the work of our clients. Therefore, we strive to provide first-rate technology solutions that are custom designed to meet the needs of each client.
B Corporation Certified
We are proud to be one of the founding Canadian B Corporations. We know that we have joined a growing movement and a community that keeps us accountable for measuring what matters most. This rigorous certification helps us retain our socially-minded vision through the inevitable changes that the future will bring.

Our Name: Why are we Called PeaceWorks?
"Peace” in the name “PeaceWorks” reflects the Mennonite heritage of our founder and the desire this organization has to be different; to be an organization that supports the values of social justice, community and integrity. Our name reflects the type of organization that we are – one that has people that live out the same values in home and work. “Peace” in many cultures around the world — and in PeaceWorks' usage of the term — is not “tranquility” or “absence of conflict,” but the active presence of justice and well-being. In other words, peace is not just a matter of “settling things down.” Anywhere there is poverty, discrimination, people silenced… the work of peace is not yet done.
"Works” in the name “PeaceWorks” means different things to different people, but reflects meaningful employment from an organization that practices what it preaches and puts our values into action. It allows employees who share ideals regarding social justice and equality to join together and live out their individual values at work. It also references the work that we do for others that spreads our organizational values into our community.
The majority of our clients are charities and not-for-profit organizations that deliver services to individuals with great challenges and needs. We believe that each of these organizations are working hard to create a world that seeks equality, social justice and peace. We work at PeaceWorks so that we can use our technical skills to help our clients further their reach and fulfill their missions. By doing so, we feel that our professional and personal goals and beliefs are being met.
Any technology company can offer great solutions, but we offer first-rate solutions from a first-class organization filled with really wonderful people.
One of our technical consultants described it best when she wrote:
“Can we live and work in a way that builds a community? Can we make social justice a lifestyle?"
PeaceWorkers are a group of talented people, who have come face to face with some of the deepest needs in our global community, and who make the same choice every single day; each one of us chooses to live and work in a way that is generous of spirit and connects with people in a positive way. Every one of us are actively involved in our communities. You will find us serving in homeless shelters, refugee programs, multiculturalism, fundraising, international development, disability research, neighbourhood schools, religious institutions, etc. We come together with a huge amount of knowledge, experience, and skills, and we build our community organizations. Each one of us, in our own ways, are finding out what it means to live with a little less, to share a little more, and to listen with compassion. Our jobs are more than a means to support our families, it is way to build community; to share what we do best with those who can make it effective."
