The New Guy

Joining the PeaceWorks team is a unique experience. I’ve only been here a few weeks and I can already feel it.

During 30 years of work in the industry which might be generally described as “doing things with computers” I have been employed in nearly a dozen positions. The majority have been in a customer support role and in the for-profit market. Some in software, some in hardware, some in-house, some assisting external customers, some for long periods of up to 14 years’ time, some for as little as a year.

Each of those jobs has felt like just that, a job. I’ve been working to help my employer make money from his customers who were using our products and services to make money from their customer and so on and so on.

I’ve now started my fourth week at PeaceWorks. I find myself comparing the experience to all those previous opportunities and finding it very different. The people I work with – my coworkers – are more intense about what they do. They seem to feel a greater sense of responsibility and personal investment in their customers. The relationships they build with their accounts have a strong sense of personal ownership and partnership.

The clients are also very different. In my first few weeks I’ve already visited a half dozen accounts and taken on a few of my own to support. Everybody has been very welcoming and understanding. They don’t necessarily understand what it is that their technical partners, PeaceWorks, are doing in their offices, but there is an underlying belief in each that PeaceWorks is there to help. A trust.

Lastly, there is the relationship between PeaceWorks’ Management and us, the PeaceWorkers. Here, at PeaceWorks, I find there is an attitude of belief in the frontline staff. It is a quality of a PeaceWorker that you can be trusted to work on your own, that you will give your best and that you don’t need to be watched over every minute and supervised from hour to hour or minute to minute. Again, there is that trust.

This is all very new to me. I’ve never been in a place where everybody seems to be sharing such a passion for helping others. The good that is being done by the not-for-profit clients that I have encountered in my short time with PeaceWorks seems to infuse our own work. We are helping those who help others. Without that passion to be of help I don’t think anyone would come to work at PeaceWorks.

Maybe that is why everybody, clients and management at least, can trust us. Maybe that trust, and the kind of person who inspires it, is what makes PeaceWorks unique.
