Finding the Root Cause

Our website clients often come to us looking for a solution to a problem. However, a lot of the time this isn't what they say when they walk in the door. A lot of the time, we're told, "we'd like to have a forum on the website", or "we'd like social media links on all of our pages", or "we've decided that we want [website feature]". Although it's easy to go ahead and provide these solutions, our job as consultants is not just to do technical work but also to try and understand our clients' real needs.

One reason people come to us instead of having an intern do their technical work, or asking someone's tech-savvy nephew to put together their website, is that we're here to share our experience in the field and to inform you of options that allow you to make the best long-term decisions. We don't want to just set up the technologies you use. We want to solve your day-to-day business needs, improve your existing workflow processes, and help you reach your audience more efficiently and effectively. When I meet with an existing, or potential client, this is one of the main things I keep in mind.

What does this mean in terms of the problems that arrive at our door? It means that usually it's time to dig into the problem and understand the underlying situation. When someone tells me, "we'd like to have a forum on the website", I often start thinking "is a forum specifically the right technology for this situation?" Then it's time to start asking questions like: "What problem are you trying to solve? What is causing that problem?" We don't do this to be difficult or to go against the plans of the client. On the contrary, we do this to help in providing effective solutions. People often pick technologies that they happen to know about, without knowing the range of options. Our job is to know the technologies so that you don't have to, and to inform you on what's out there. Our job is to understand the root cause of your need and to try and help your day-to-day work go more smoothly.

And one last word of warning: technology is a great tool, but it doesn't always provide the full solution. There are often additional steps and costs needed in making a technological change. In creating a forum, for example, installing the software is a small cost compared to the ongoing process of keeping topics running and moderating discussions. This also applies to social media, which everyone is trying to stay on top of; it's easy to set up a blog or twitter account, but keeping it up to date can be a lot more work than people anticipate.

So next time you're making changes with your technology, ask yourself, "Am I just picking something that I'm familiar with, or could there be other options out there? Am I actually solving the root problem?" Consultants are here not just to create the solutions that you imagine, but also to help you imagine other ways to make your life easier as you try to get your real work done.
