Becoming a Certified B Corporation

As you may know, PeaceWorks is the first B Corporation in the K-W region (for what it matters, it is also one of the first B Corps in Canada…).  Because of this, we have been featured in a number of newspapers in the area and Nolan Andres, CEO of PeaceWorks, has been invited to speak at a number of events.

Exposure and PR are great, no denial here, but is that all this is about? No! Back in 2009, when I approached B Lab to inquire about the B Corp certification, I was prompted to do so after seeing one of our own clients achieve their certification (we learn from you too!). It was an intriguing discovery: get a third party certification that can substantiate what you said you’ve done for the past 13+ years.

A Social Enterprise

PeaceWorks has been a “Social Enterprise” from the beginning: it is part of our vision and mission; it is part of our business model.  We are legally a for-profit organization, but we distribute our profits back to the community in the form of base line and additional discounts to our not-for-profit clients.  Additionally, no one person “owns” PeaceWorks – we have structured ourselves more or less like a worker’s co-op.  Finally, we involve for-profit organizations to participate and support our mission by giving them a chance to make a difference -- supporting not-for-profits while  getting access to first-rate technical expertise. But it is one thing to just brag about what you do and how you do it and another thing to actually be able to substantiate these facts in an independent manner…

The Certification Process

B Lab is a non-profit organization dedicated to building a new sector of the economy that uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. Primarily B Lab drives change through three interrelated initiatives: 1) building a community of Certified B Corporations to make it easier for all of us to tell the difference between “good companies” and just good marketing; 2) driving capital to impact investments to organizations that make a real difference; and 3) advancing supportive public policies to accelerate growth of social entrepreneurship and impact investing.

To earn certification, B Corps must go through a rigorous interview and assessment, achieve a verified minimum score (80 out of 200) on the B Impact Assessment and amend their bylaws to legally require their directors to consider the interests of multiple stakeholders, not just shareholders, when making decisions.

There are a number of areas where one gets assessed when going through this certification process: Accountability, Employees, Clients, Community and Environment. It seems that PeaceWorks has really made a difference in two specific areas: Worker Impact (Employees) and Community Impact (overall impact of our organization has in the community and the organizations we work with).

I‘m proud of what we are doing here, I’m proud of my fellow PeaceWorkers and their dedication to helping others!

As I said before, we have always done these things , but it is nice to have the recognition of an independent 3rd party that confirms and affirms what we are doing!

My hope is that many more organizations will take our lead and become certified B Corps. If you need any help navigating the B Corp certification process let us know and we will help! I also hope that this entry shed some light on our affiliation with B Lab and why we did it.  For more information about B Lab and B Corps, check www.bcorporation.net.
