"... even more important to us is the sense that we are working together and "through" PeaceWorks as a "for profit" company to help our friends and neighbours in the "not for profit" realm. It is this sense of "partnership" that adds something special beyond the usual relationship with a developer, and it speaks to our acute belief as a company in social justice and our responsibility to be a voice for peace in our community. With best in class custom software solutions and a shared perspective of community, ours has been a uniquely satisfying business relationship that we look forward to continuing for many more years to come."
How do we provide Green Hosting?
We started by working out how much energy is consumed by our hosting operations. This includes:
- all of our web and email servers
- datacentre infrastructure and cooling
For each unit of energy consumed, we purchase the same amount of certified renewable energy — generated from renewable sources such as wind and solar — and this energy is injected onto the grid.
In an ideal world, we would use this renewable energy directly to power our servers. Unfortunately, we do not have control over the energy contract which supplies the datacentre.
What we do is ensure that the renewable energy we purchase is put onto the same regional power grids from which we draw the energy. We pay the premium for the renewable energy and someone on the grid will use it (at regular rates). The net effect is as if we had used it ourselves.
We are proud to take this initiative to reduce our carbon footprint and help support the growing green power market.
